Abstract
It is attempted in this paper to analyze if Adolescents¡¯ adaptation to school life might influence their suicidal ideation and whether depression could be a cause of such an ideation as a mediator. A group of 566 middle and high school students enrolled in Chungnam Province and Daejeon Metropolitan City were selected as subjects for this analysis and the three-stage method of Baron & Kenny (1986) was borrowed for analyzing the data gathered from the subjects. The major outcomes of the analysis could be summed up as follows: first, Adolescents¡¯ adaptation to school life was found to have negative (-) impact upon their suicidal ideation; second, Adolescents¡¯ adaptation to school life turned out to have negative (-) influence on their depression; third, depression influenced the suicidal ideation of Adolescents positively (+), it was made known from the study; and fourth, the analysis showed that Adolescents¡¯ adaptation to school life could exercise influence on their suicidal ideation with depression as a mediator, that is, adaptation to school life might have negative (-) influence on their suicidal ideation indirectly with depression acting as a mediator, revealing that depression could have a full mediating effect on the relationship between adaptation to school life and suicidal ideation. Based on the results of this study, it was discussed in the present paper how to improve school life for adolescents and how to intervene practically in order to promote their mental health.
